GIMP 是 GNU 图像处理程序(GNU Image Manipulation Program)的缩写。包括几乎所有图象处理所需的功能，号称Linux下的PhotoShop。GIMP在Linux系统推出时就风靡了许多绘图爱好 者的喜爱，它的接口相当轻巧，但其功能却不输于专业的绘图软件；它提供了各种的影像处理工具、滤镜，还有许多的组件模块，对于要制作一个又酷又炫的网页按 钮或网站Logo来说是一个非常方便好用的绘图软件，因为它也提供了许多的组件模块，你只要稍加修改一下，便可制作出一个属于你的网页按钮或网站 Logo。

GIMP 2.8.4 发布了，带来了一些重要的 bug 修复。GIMP 2.8 是一个稳定分支，目前该系列不会再添加新的功能，只会包含 bug 修复。

GIMP 2.8.4 最重要的改变包括:

• Better names for the default filters in save and export
• Make tool drawing (esp. the brush outline) much more responsive
• Remember the "maximized" state across sessions
• Simplify the splash image code a lot, makes it appear immediately again
• Allow the text tool to start on an image without layers
• Various fixes for text style attribute handling
• Set unconfigured input devices to eraser if GTK+ says they are erasers
• Make libgimp drawable combo boxes aware of layer groups
• Fix item width in GimpPageSelector (used e.g. in PDF import)
• Better default values in the Drop Shadow script
• Fixed bugs in the BMP plug-in
• Lots of bug fixes and translation updates

下一个 GIMP 版本是 2.10 ，将支持得到更高的位深度，支持层组的层罩，完全移植到 GEGL 等。而 GIMP 3.0 将最终移植到 GTK3，这两个版本的发行日期目前还没计划。
